A young boy has been cautioned after a firework was thrown at a police station in west Belfast.

The incident happened in the New Barnsley Drive area shortly before 8pm on Thursday.

A police spokesperson said it was reported that a young male approached the premises and lit a firework before throwing at the building, where it exploded upon landing on the other side of the fence.

“He was subsequently detained by officers in the Blackmountain Parade area, where he was cautioned for possession of a firework and attempted criminal damage,” they said.

Police went on to issue a message about the dangers of using fireworks.

“These are made up of explosive materials, and if misused can cause serious harm, or life-changing injuries,” they said.

“Remember, what might feel like harmless fun to some, may feel like anti-social behaviour to others and could result in a criminal record if convicted of an offence.

“People have the right to feel safe in their home and when they go about their business.

“We will continue to work alongside our partner agencies, local representatives and the community to address these issues.

“I would urge parents to take an active interest in where your children are socialising and what they are doing, reminding them of the dangers of fireworks.
