A three-day battle against a fire at a scrap yard in Belfast has ended.

Firefighters were first called to tackle the blaze at a recycling centre on Queen’s Island just after 12pm on Wednesday.

A Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service (NIFRS) spokesperson said more than 50 personnel were involved in the operation.

The cause of the fire amid scrap cars is believed to be accidental in the incident that was dealt with by just after midday on Friday.

“Firefighters were called to reports of a well-developed fire involving approximately 4,500 tonnes of scrap cars and loose metal,” they said.

“Firefighters worked tirelessly throughout the duration of the incident to bring the fire under control and prevent further fire spread.

“At the height of the incident, over 50 firefighters, supported by other fire service personnel, were involved in the operational response alongside Belfast Harbour fire tugs and Sky Watch NI.”

They added: “We would like to thank the public for their patience whilst we dealt with this incident, our multi-agency partners for their support and NIFRS personnel for their hard work and professionalism throughout the response.”
