Firefighters to spend second night tackling Belfast blaze

Firefighters will spend a second night tackling a blaze involving thousands of tonnes of scrap cars in Belfast.

The operation to deal with the incident on Queen’s Island, which involved Belfast Harbour fire tugs as well as an air unit, is continuing.

The initial call to the scene on East Twin Road was received on Wednesday afternoon.

Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service (NIFRS) said the fire involved 4,500 tonnes of scrap cars.

A spokesperson said: “NIFRS crews remain at the scene of a fire at East Twin Road, Shipyard, Belfast, following the initial call at 12.14pm yesterday.

“Three fire appliances are currently in attendance, supported by two high-volume pumps and a command support unit.

“Crews are expected to remain at the scene throughout the night.

“We would like to thank our personnel for their hard work and dedication as firefighting operations continue.”
