The Scottish Government will open five, new, walk-in GP clinics in its first 100 days in office, the Health Secretary has announced.

Visiting the site where a new centre is due to open, later this month, in Aberdeen, Angela Constance said there had been “very positive outcomes” from the six which have already opened.

The first phase of the Government’s rollout includes 16 sites across the country, with a further 14 planned for the second phase.

Speaking to the Press Association, Ms Constance said: “We’re seeing very positive outcomes for patients and every area where a GP walk-in service has opened has undertaken a different model, so that’s really positive.

“What we are also seeing is that GP walk-in services are to complement existing GP practices.

“So, for my mother, who’s a lady of a certain age with certain health conditions, she likes continuity of care, to see her own family doctor, whereas perhaps myself or other working people, we really need to be seen the same day so that we can access care and get back to our work.”

She added: “Our intention is to open 30 walk-in GP services the length and breadth of Scotland.

“As I said, the one here at the heart of Aberdeen is the seventh, we will open another four within our first 100 days and I will be announcing the locations of the remaining 14 out of 30 where the specific locations have still to be decided.”

Emma King, the primary care lead for Aberdeen City Health and Social Care Partnership, added: “We are looking forward to getting to work and testing this new approach to improving access to same-day care.”
