Late MSP `believed in women before they believed in themselves´

Christina McKelvie died from secondary breast cancer last year, and her work is being remembered on International Women´s Day.

An MSP who died last year from cancer “believed in women before they believed in themselves”, the organiser of a charity event in her name has said.

Christina McKelvie died in March 2025 from secondary breast cancer after having served as an MSP since 2007 and been a minister in a number of briefs.

Her death drew tributes from across the political spectrum, with praise centring especially around her work with women in politics.

The Christina McKelvie Celebration Ball will be held in her honour in Glasgow on April 4, organised by a group of her family and friends.

Speaking on International Women’s Day on Sunday, Dionne Hossack, the chairwoman of the organising committee, said: “Christina believed in women before they believed in themselves I know that because she did that for me.

“As a young woman stepping into politics and professional life, Christina’s encouragement gave me the confidence to use my voice and stand up for what matters.

“The Christina McKelvie Celebration Ball isn’t just about remembering her, it’s about carrying her spirit forward.

“On International Women’s Day, I think it’s important to remember that progress happens when women lift each other up just as Christina did that every single day.

“This ball is our promise to keep doing the same.”
